Start for freeIf you're joining Brodie Rec. League, your Wingman™ uniform — pro-cut jersey and shorts with your name and number — comes in your Welcome Pack before your first game. That's handled.
Here's what else you need to show up ready.
This is not the area to cheap out. Running shoes, cross-trainers, and lifestyle sneakers are liabilities on a basketball court. Basketball-specific footwear provides the lateral support, court traction, and ankle stability that makes cutting and stopping safe. Get a dedicated pair of basketball shoes before your first game.
You don't need to spend $200. Nike LeBrons and Jordan 1s are for Instagram. For $70–120 you can get a functional pair that does everything you need for adult rec basketball.
Compression shorts and a moisture-wicking base layer under your uniform make a real difference in comfort and temperature regulation. For anyone over 30, compression also provides meaningful muscle support during lateral movement.
Knee sleeves. If you have any history of knee issues, wear them. Preventive is better than reactive.
Ankle braces. High-top shoes help. Actual ankle braces help more if you have a history of sprains.
Mouthguard. Optional in recreational divisions. Strongly recommended in competitive and elite.
Thirty-two ounces is the minimum. Bring more. Games are more intense than you remember and dehydration hits adult athletes faster than it did at 20.
Everything else — tape, headbands, shooting sleeves — is personal preference. The shoes and compression layer are the baseline.
