How to Start a Basketball Team as an Adult

Step 1: Decide What You're Building

Pickup team? Rec league squad? Competitive division team? The answer shapes everything that comes next. Pickup is casual — you're just organizing regular runs. Rec league means you need eight to ten committed players, a registration window, and money. Competitive means you need players who can actually execute and show up every week.

Be honest about what your network can support. Starting with a full competitive team when you have four confirmed players is a recipe for forfeit fees.

Step 2: Build Your Roster

Start with who you know. Work colleagues, old teammates, gym regulars, guys you've been meaning to play with for years. Most adult basketball teams are built through existing networks before a single public post goes out.

You need ten to twelve committed players for a full rec league roster — enough to cover absences without forfeiting. Eight is the minimum most leagues accept. Below that and you're constantly scrambling.

Step 3: Pick the Right League

Not all leagues are worth building a team for. You want skill divisions that actually mean something, a fixed schedule, live stats, and an organization that will still be running by playoff time.

Green flags: six or more skill tiers, published schedules before the season starts, a platform with real standings and stats, included uniforms, and communication that doesn't require you to chase the organizer.

Red flags: one or two skill levels, no published schedule before the season, Google Sheet standings, and a registration process that's just a Venmo request.

Step 4: Register and Show Up

Most adults spend more time planning to start a team than it would've taken to actually register. Pick the league. Pick the division. Set the group chat expectation that everyone shows up week one.

The team chemistry you're imagining — the crew, the inside jokes, the playoff run — none of that happens until someone actually submits the registration form.

Brodie Rec. League lets you register as a complete team or add free agents to fill your roster. Find your city and start building at brodierec.com.
